Sue Caristo and team at the 4th annual Gail Parkins Ovarian Awareness walk.
It is in Raleigh, North Carolina. It's the only Ovarian Cancer Walk in the state.
100% of the proceeds go to Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center for GYN (Ovarian) cancer research. They started out the 1st year with about 150 people and raised about $60,000. This year we had 1000 people (32 of them were my team "Steppin' for Sue" in our yellow t-shirts and teal boas!) and we raised $180,000! Ovarian cancer is called the "silent killer" because the symptoms are common and vague-most women are misdiagnosed until they are stage III or IV which significantly decreases life expectancy to about 30-40% 5 year survival rate. Not very good odds. Currently there is not a dependable screening test. This money has afforded Duke to hire a full time researcher, purchase additional equipment and hopefully develop a screening test to get women diagnosed earlier and greatly improve survival.
